Abstract


    Identity is a set of spiritual, material and psychological qualities and characteristics that represent the personality of the individual and the group and distinguish it from other nations. The reference to individual identity includes the idea of the inner self that equals some basic characteristics that give it integration and coherence and provide the foundation on which the personality is built and is like the spirit of society . Man is by nature a social being whose identity is formed through his interactions with individuals and groups and depends increasingly on the basic components of culture including (language, religion and belief, customs and traditions, values and morals, law, art, behavioral development ....)

     The Kurds in Southern Kurdistan have joined the indigenous human community of the region and have not moved to it. It is a cohesive community with a deep history , a common destiny and a cultural identity that distinguishes them from other nations. The spiritual formation of the cultural identity included among other peoples does not remain stable, but rather varies and changes according to the changes that occur in the human relationship with others from family, people and companions. In the progress and development of society, the individual is attracted to a group of different identities.

   The aim of choosing this topic is to shed light on the basic components that contributed to the formation and preservation of the Kurdish identity. This study consists of an introduction and three main sections: The first section deals with the definition of identity and the most important basic components of the Kurdish identity. The second section sheds light on the cultural identity. The third section includes the effects of modernity on the Kurdish identity in Southern Kurdistan. The conclusion summarizes all the conclusions reached by the study. This study relied on the descriptive approach to analyze the nature of the concept of identity and its basic components and analyze the challenges of modernity on the Kurdish identity in Southern Kurdistan.
