Abstract

Having an autistic child brings various changes, duties, and responsibilities in family life. The families with autistic children are required to adapt to these changes to avoid the upcoming challenges. The aim of this qualitative study is, therefore, to descriptively reveal issues faced by the families of individuals with autism spectrum disorders. To collect data, interviews were carried out with eleven parents of autistic children, who were randomly selected. After conducting content analysis, the results indicated that families with autistic individuals face numerous social and familial challenges. The source of these challenges is either the autistic child himself/herself or the lack of awareness of society, especially the close individuals in the family. Further, an autistic child brings a multitude of psychological problems to the family, including anxiety, fear, and depression. It was also found that the families had abandoned the required training that the children needed in the middle of the process due to the high costs of the training.  On the other hand, the families had poor knowledge levels with respect to autism, which, consequently, led parents to have more social, psychological, and economic problems.
