Abstract


In this research, an assessment of visual pollution was carried out in the Sulaimani city center
bazaar. Visual pollution sources and their negative effects were realized. This research is a descriptive
– analytical research that qualitative method was used to obtain the proposed objectives. A
questionnaire was conducted and 300 participants participated. Sources and types of visual pollution
in study area are waste 100%, billboards and writing on walls 71%, wire, cable and mobile tower
62%, tools on buildings’ facades 42%, old and uncompleted building with different designs and
facades 41%, having various services with different characteristics, transportation vehicles and their
parking systems 31% and excessive light use 25%. This pollution can cause psychological and body
problems such as anxiety, stress and psychological pressure. Body diseases including high blood
pressure, heartbeat, diabetes, colon, shortness of breath, stomach injury and eyes sore. Visual
pollution can be solved by determine laws and regulations regarding advertisement and traffic and
enforced them properly. Reconstruction and recovery of facades and changed parts of buildings.
Collecting waste and dumping materials in cities and solve them scientifically.
