Abstract


This study investigates the impact of political freedom on economic growth to the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, namely: Kingdom of Bahrain. Kuwait, Sultanate of Oman, Qatar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), and United Arab Emirates. The period studied covered the years 1975 to 2018. In this study the researchers relaxed the assumption of cross section independence. A second-generation type of stationarity test was employed. The newly    Umitrescu and Hurlin (2012) non-causality test was used. The results indicated that there is bidirectional causality existed between economic growth and political rights as well as between civil liberties and economic growth. In addition, the results show that there is causality from both directions between civil liberties and political rights.  As a result, we recommend expanding civil liberties and political rights to spur economic activity in the GCC region.
