Abstract

During the years of the First World War (1914-1918), the Kurds played humanitarian roles towards the other ethnic and religious components of Kurdistan. This happened while the Ottoman Empire attempted, in various ways, to involve the Kurds in the war against those components in the name of Jihad (holy war) and the existence of danger on the Islamic world. Even though a number of Kurdish tribes got involved in the war and had a limited participation, but it was not a public stance of the whole Kurds. The Kurds generally helped the Christians and non-Muslims. The Kurds rescued many of these people as they were residing on the same land throughout history.

Even though the Alawi Kurds and Yazidiz were targeted by the Ottoman Empire army, but still they could help and rescue many Christians from mass killings. The Alawi Kurds of Darsim had a tangible role to rescue them, provide them with shelter and guide them to reach the Russian army territory. Also, the areas of the Yazidi Kurds became a safe zone for many Christians. Consequently, the Ottoman Empire army attacked the Yazidi city of Shangal (Sinjar) which caused lots of destruction.

The reason behind choosing this topic is that so far, to the best of the researcher’s knowledge, there is not a specific study tackling this matter fully in the universities. On the contrary, many previous studies focused on the negative role of the Kurds in attacking the other religious components. Even though some Kurdish tribes took part in the war against the other components, but it was limited and personal. Generally speaking, the vast majority of the Kurds were passionate with the other religious components, not against them.

This study had a number of limitations. Firstly, shortage of academic and scientific sources in Kurdish was a big obstacle. This made the researcher get sources from other languages and translate them into Kurdish which was very difficult and time consuming. Secondly, Covid 19 was another big obstacle that led to closing many libraries for a long period of time; besides, the researcher himself was a victim of Covid 19.

Finally, this study consists of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. Chapter one discusses the start of the war and the displacement of the people who resided in the boarder with Russia. Chapter two deals with the role of the Kurds in rescuing the displaced people and refugees of the other areas. Chapter three deals with the role of the Alawi Kurds and Yazidis towards Assyrians and Armenians. The study ends with presenting the conclusion of the study.
