Abstract

This research aims to examine the scholarly and intellectual biography of Sheikh Dr. Abdullah Al-Naqshbandi, one of the most prominent Iraqi scholars of the twentieth century. It explores his family background rooted in the Naqshbandi Sufi tradition, and highlights his life, writings, scientific status, and religious and social contributions. The study begins by discussing the linguistic and historical origins of the term “Naqshbandi,” followed by an overview of the life of his father, Sheikh Mustafa Al-Naqshbandi—known as “Kamal Al-Din”—a distinguished spiritual guide and scholar whose influence played a fundamental role in shaping Abdullah’s character and scholarly path.

The research then covers the stages of Sheikh Abdullah’s early education, which relied on memorization and learning under leading scholars of his time. The study also addresses his mastery of multiple languages, his academic journey at Al-Azhar University, and his studies in Europe, where he earned a PhD in Islamic law compared to Roman law from the University of London, in addition to a master’s degree from the Sorbonne. The research highlights his significant scholarly standing, his contributions to Islamic thought, his role as a teacher and spiritual guide, and his authorization (ijazah) of many pupils and successors.

Furthermore, the study explores his diverse writings in Islamic jurisprudence, theology, literature, and linguistics, which reflect his encyclopedic knowledge and broad intellectual interests. It also examines his major professional roles, including his position as President of the Financial Audit Bureau in Iraq, and his reform efforts within the institutions he served. The research concludes with an overview of his personal qualities, his social influence, and his passing in the year 2000 after a lifetime dedicated to knowledge, spiritual guidance, and public service.
