Abstract

Sayyid Abd al-Rahim al-Mawlawi, in addition to being an undisputed poet and one of the most prominent scholars of his time, was a learned and deeply versed scholar of Islamic sciences, particularly in theology and creed. His famous theological treatises in Arabic, Persian, and Kurdish are a testament to this. Al-Mawlawi held a high position in the field of theology among his contemporaries, including the renowned scholar Sayyid Hasan al-Juri, author of the treatise on theology, which was considered one of the most important theological works of that era. This high standing is evidenced by the critical discussions, conflicting opinions, and theological disputes that have been reported between al-Mawlawi and his contemporaries, including those documented by Sayyid Hasan al-Juri in his book, which explores the nature of faith: is it a matter of acquired knowledge or an act of the soul? In this context, he quotes verses from Rumi's Kurdish poem, addressing him as "the virtuous one" to honor his stature and elevate his position. He then critiques Rumi's view, offering what he considers sound and acceptable, relying on divine inspiration and the pronouncements of earlier theologians on this matter. In this article, the author explores the differing perspectives of Rumi and Sayyid Hasan al-Juri on the nature of faith, highlighting Rumi's contributions to theological discourse on the subject and al-Juri's critique of his own views on the matter.
