Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of modern life and serves as a platform for communication and exchange of ideas, culture and information. This study attempts to highlight the role of social media in building and expressing the cultural identity of the Kurdish nation in the digital age. Nowadays, coinciding with the globalization of communications, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others have gone beyond being just a means of communication and have become a significant environment for cultural, political and identity exchange. For a nation like the Kurds, which has historically faced difficulties in preserving and affirming its identity due to the lack of a state, these platforms have provided an opportunity to affirm and reproduce their cultural heritage. This study examines how Kurdish individuals use social media to reconstruct and express their cultural identity, especially the interactions within these platforms, such as posts and hashtags, which contribute to the preservation and reproduction of Kurdish identity. In this regard, this study uses the work of contemporary French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to investigate how the Kurdish individual defines his identity through social media in the globalized world. Through a qualitative method, the study analyzes how interactions through accounts on the Instagram platform contribute to creating an environment that facilitates the reproduction of Kurdish cultural identity. Therefore, the research concluded that each of the accounts obtained by taking advantage of cultural capital, including all three types of tangible, objective and institutional cultural capital, have produced social capital in the field of Instagram and thus played a role in spreading and reproducing Kurdish national identity.
