The protracted war between Iran and Iraq created an atmosphere of instability in Kurdistan, resulting in a series of horrific events and the genocide of the Kurdish people. Among the most atrocious incidents of this decade-long conflict was the chemical attack on Halabja, which claimed the lives of thousands of civilians and injured tens of thousands more. This tragedy, which occurred on March 16, 1988, drew significant attention from both regional and international media. Iranian media coverage played a pivotal role in transforming the incident into a global issue; numerous Iranian photographers and journalists visited Halabja and relayed the details of the attack to the outside world.
Newspapers covered the tragedy from various angles through news reports and photographs captured by Iranian journalists. They published statements from Iranian officials regarding the chemical attack on Halabja, thereby informing the international community about the incident. Consequently, the months following the disaster are of immense importance for historical documentation and remembrance, prompting the need for this study. As no prior research has been conducted in this specific area, this study represents the first attempt of its kind. The central question focuses on the extent of the newspaper's coverage of the disaster and how that coverage was reflected within its pages.
The study primarily employs a descriptive-analytical approach, analyzing the newspaper's front page, the reception of the news, and the presentation of the disaster, while also examining the information contained within the publication and classifying the published news items.
